Really good preformances by our 4 entrants at the first running of the Elite Epee Women’ Open. Beatrice Verastegui won two great 15-14 matches, including one against 9th seed Eryn Spinlove to reach the last 16 where she was defeated by Leo McKinnon who is a top 10 GB ranked fencer 15-12 to place 16th. Kate Howser secured 21st following a strong 1st round performance and top 64 win, losing to 6th seed Katrina Smith. Amelia McCormack, aged just 14, stepped up a huge level having only before entered low key senior events and showed she can compete at this level. A 3 win/3 loss first round secured a bye straight into the last 64 where she lost to the far more experienced Jenny Yate from Cardiff to secure 47th place and a huge boost to her senior national ranking. Jacqui Lever, who only started fencing had a very strong poule , however managed a win and had a score of 5-3 to former GB number 1 Jo Maynard, before losing to number 3 seed Elisabeth Powell from the Malvern club.
All three of Beatrice, Kate and Amelia should get a boost to their GB rankings when the August rankings are published, Well done Ladies…
